Joystick module with Arduino Nano

Wiring for the Analog joystick (KY-023) on the Arduino Nano (ATmega328P, 5 V logic), chosen with the same pin rules BoardPilot uses: default buses first, and no pins that are used for flash, USB, the debugger or booting.

Wiring

Joystick module pinRoleArduino Nano pinNotes
GNDGroundGND
+5VPower3V3Connect to 3V3 anyway, so the outputs stay within the ADC range
VRXAnalog outputA0 (PC0)
VRYAnalog outputA1 (PC1)
SWOutput from the partD2 (PD2)Button: LOW when pressed. Use INPUT_PULLUP

Check before you power it on

Test code (Arduino)

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(115200);
}

void loop() {
  long mv = (long)analogRead(14) * 5000L / 1023;  // VRX on A0
  Serial.println(mv);
  delay(200);
}

Arduino board: arduino:avr:nano. Clones with the old bootloader upload at 57600 baud: choose “ATmega328P (Old Bootloader)” if uploads fail.

Questions

Which Arduino Nano pins do I use for the Joystick module?

GND → GND, +5V → 3V3, VRX → A0 (PC0), VRY → A1 (PC1), SW → D2 (PD2).

Does the Joystick module work with the Arduino Nano at 5 V?

The Joystick module is a 3.3 V part and the Arduino Nano uses 5 V signals. Power it from 3.3 V and put a level shifter on the signal wires, or buy a 5 V version of the module.

BoardPilot checks this wiring in 3D as you build it, and finds crossed or missing wires on the real board.
