L298N with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1
Wiring for the L298N dual motor driver on the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 (ESP32-S3, 3.3 V logic), chosen with the same pin rules BoardPilot uses: default buses first, and no pins that are used for flash, USB, the debugger or booting.
Wiring
| L298N pin | Role | ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 pin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENA | Input to the part | 4 | Motor A speed (PWM). Remove the jumper to use it |
| IN1 | Input to the part | 5 | Motor A direction |
| IN2 | Input to the part | 6 | Motor A direction |
| IN3 | Input to the part | 7 | Motor B direction |
| IN4 | Input to the part | 15 | Motor B direction |
| ENB | Input to the part | 16 | Motor B speed (PWM). Remove the jumper to use it |
| 12V | Not wired to the board | not connected | Motor supply 5 to 35 V from a separate supply |
| GND | Ground | G | |
| 5V | Not wired to the board | not connected | 5 V output of the on-board regulator (jumper on, supply up to 12 V) |
| OUT1 | Not wired to the board | not connected | Motor A |
| OUT2 | Not wired to the board | not connected | Motor A |
| OUT3 | Not wired to the board | not connected | Motor B |
| OUT4 | Not wired to the board | not connected | Motor B |
Check before you power it on
- Motors, servos, relays and LED strips can draw more current than the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1’s pins or USB can give. Power them separately and connect the grounds together.
Test code (Arduino)
// Motor A: ENA = speed (PWM), IN1/IN2 = direction. Remove the ENA jumper on the module.
void setup() {
pinMode(5, OUTPUT);
pinMode(6, OUTPUT);
pinMode(4, OUTPUT);
}
void loop() {
digitalWrite(5, HIGH);
digitalWrite(6, LOW);
analogWrite(4, 180); // about 70% speed
delay(2000);
analogWrite(4, 0); // stop
delay(1000);
}
Arduino board: esp32:esp32:esp32s3. Use the port labelled UART. If uploading does not start, hold BOOT, press and release RESET, then release BOOT.
Questions
Which ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 pins do I use for the L298N?
ENA → 4, IN1 → 5, IN2 → 6, IN3 → 7, IN4 → 15, ENB → 16, GND → G.
Does the L298N work with the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 at 3.3 V?
Yes: the L298N runs at 5 V and the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 uses 3.3 V signals, so no level shifting is needed.
BoardPilot checks this wiring in 3D as you build it, and finds crossed or missing wires on the real board.
